A Purpose-Driven Private Property Wedding in Mount Vernon
Private property weddings can be some of the most rewarding, expressive, and deeply personal celebrations to design. They also require an immense amount of planning, intention, and logistical expertise to execute well. This Mount Vernon wedding is a beautiful example of what happens when a couple is willing to think critically about their priorities, pivot when necessary, and align their investment with what truly matters to them.
What began as a wedding planned for Saltwater Farm ultimately transformed into a fully custom, weekend-long celebration on the groom’s family property. The result was an experience that felt expansive, grounded in Pacific Northwest roots, and deeply reflective of the couple’s values and community.
The couple
Both born and raised in Washington, Makaela and Connor share a deep love for the outdoors and the sense of connection that comes from being rooted in place. Whether hiking, cooking, hosting, or spending time on the family farm, their lives revolve around creating spaces where people feel welcome.
Their wedding was no exception. They described their vision as an elevated dinner party, one that honored their Pacific Northwest upbringing while also paying tribute to Samoan heritage through an island-inspired setting. Community was everything to them. This was not just a wedding. It was a gathering of the people who had shaped their relationship over the last four years.
From the beginning, it was clear that this would be a celebration built on intention, not expectation.
The pivot: aligning budget with value
When this couple first came to us, they had already secured a date at Saltwater Farm and begun building their vendor team. While we were excited about the opportunity, it became clear through our early planning conversations that the venue constraints were limiting their ability to fully express their vision.
This is one of the most important parts of our work as planners. We do not just execute. We guide. We evaluate. We ask whether the investment is actually serving the experience our couples want to create.
After comparing budgets, vendor flexibility, and overall creative potential, we made the decision together to pivot away from Saltwater Farm and toward a private property celebration in Mount Vernon. It was a bold move. And it was the right one.
Building a venue from the ground up
Private property weddings offer unmatched freedom. They also require building an event from the ground up.
This meant additional site walks, deeper vendor coordination, expanded rental orders, and a comprehensive logistical plan to ensure the property was both respected and restored at the end of the weekend. Power, flow, guest experience, catering infrastructure, and transportation all needed to be considered at a much more detailed level.
This is where full-service planning becomes invaluable. With a clear plan, strong communication, and a collaborative working relationship, we were able to transform a family property into a fully realized event space while maintaining the integrity of the land itself.
Designing an experience rooted in personality
Once the pivot was complete, everything opened up. With increased flexibility in budget and vendor selection, the couple leaned fully into personalization. They invested in weekend-long photography coverage, videography, and a personal stylist who sourced one-of-a-kind looks in New York. The ceremony space, curated by Connor’s mother, a professional flower farmer, was surrounded by dahlias in a custom color palette that reflected both the season and the couple’s aesthetic.
The reception design layered in thoughtful details. Custom stationery, intentional tabletop elements, and stylish tent lighting created an atmosphere that felt both elevated and inviting. A cocktail hour oyster bar added a distinctly Pacific Northwest touch, while Dick’s food truck made a late-night appearance that guests absolutely loved.
This is what happens when budget is aligned with value. Every choice supports the experience.
A day that delivered on every level
October in Mount Vernon can be unpredictable, but the weather showed up in full support. Sunshine and color carried through the entire day, creating a vibrant backdrop for the celebration.
The catering and bar service struck a perfect balance between high-end dining and relaxed hospitality. Guests felt cared for without feeling restricted. The energy of the crowd was unmatched. The outfits, the laughter, the presence. We would absolutely hire them as professional wedding guests.
One of the most dynamic elements of the day was the bride’s styling experience. With Angie Evans on site, she transitioned through three distinct looks: her ceremony and dinner attire, a traditional Samoan outfit for the money dance, and a late-night reception look. These transitions not only added visual impact but also created intentional pauses throughout the day, allowing her to reset, reconnect, and re-enter the celebration with fresh energy.
From a design perspective, we focused on capturing the late-season richness of dahlias, the charm of a working farm, and the romance of an untamed field. Every decision was made in partnership with the couple, allowing them to show up in the details while we held the overall framework.
