An International Wedding Celebration at The Ruins in Seattle
Some weddings are beautiful because of the flowers. Some are memorable because of the food, the music, or the venue. Rachel and Graeme's wedding at The Ruins in Seattle was all of those things. But what made it truly unforgettable was the people.
Their celebration brought together friends and family from around the world. Some guests traveled from Australia and New Zealand. Others came from across the United States. Many had heard stories about one another for years but had never actually met. This wedding was about connecting communities, cultures, and friendships that had helped shape Rachel and Graeme's lives long before they found one another.
As planners, we often talk about creating meaningful guest experiences. This wedding was one of our favorite examples of what that can look like.
The Couple: Rachel + Graeme
Rachel and Graeme's story began through mutual friends while Graeme, a Kiwi living in Sydney, was traveling through the United States. What followed was two years of long distance, countless FaceTime calls, international flights, and the kind of commitment that requires equal parts patience, trust, and optimism. Eventually, Rachel made the decision to take a year away from her demanding career as an apparel designer and move to Sydney, creating space to invest in both herself and their relationship.
Together, they share a love of travel, nature, creativity, and meaningful connection. They are open communicators, thoughtful decision-makers, and the type of people who approach life with genuine curiosity. Their vision for the wedding was refreshingly simple. They wanted to be surrounded by people they loved and have an incredible time doing it. As Rachel shared during planning, "I want the event to be gorgeous, but most importantly I want it to be joyful and fun and full of light."
Finding The Ruins: A Seattle Wedding Venue Worth Discovering
One of our favorite parts of this planning journey is that Rachel and Graeme actually found The Ruins through one of our venue recommendation blogs. Because they were living internationally throughout much of the planning process, venue hunting looked a little different than it does for most couples. Rachel's mom and sister toured venues on their behalf while Rachel and Graeme reviewed photos, videos, and notes from across the globe.
The Ruins was one of the venues we suggested that sat completely outside their original vision. And then they saw it. If you've ever visited The Ruins, you understand the reaction. The venue feels like stepping into another world. Layers of collected antiques, dramatic architecture, hidden rooms, rich textures, and unexpected details create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Seattle. It feels simultaneously historic, theatrical, romantic, and entirely impossible to replicate. For a couple who valued creativity and storytelling, it was the perfect fit.
Why Thoughtful Planning Matters for International Weddings
When guests are flying in from multiple countries and continents, wedding planning extends far beyond a timeline and seating chart. The guest experience becomes part of the event design. One of the things we loved most about Rachel and Graeme was how deeply they cared about creating opportunities for people to connect. They wanted guests to leave feeling like they had become part of one larger community rather than simply attending a wedding.
Throughout the weekend, we intentionally created moments where different friend groups, family members, and loved ones could interact naturally. The result was exactly what they hoped for. People who had only heard stories about one another for years suddenly found themselves sharing cocktails, swapping travel stories, and forming friendships of their own.
As Rachel later shared in her review, one of her favorite aspects of working with Tapestry was the way we helped guide difficult decisions while keeping the focus on what truly mattered. "One of my favorite things were all of the talking prompts she gave us to get to the heart of what was truly important to us as a couple." That clarity became the foundation for every planning decision we made together.
A Celebration Inspired by Outlander in France
The Ruins already offers incredible character on its own, but Rachel and Graeme embraced the opportunity to lean fully into the venue's atmosphere. The design inspiration quickly became what we lovingly referred to as "Outlander in France." Rich, saturated linens layered throughout the reception. Baroque-inspired details added texture and depth. Seating assignments were displayed within an antique apothecary cabinet that felt as though it had always belonged in the venue. Live piano music floated through cocktail hour while guests explored the space.
Later in the evening, guests discovered a hidden speakeasy-inspired cocktail experience that felt perfectly at home within the venue's winding rooms and secret corners. The design never competed with The Ruins. Instead, it amplified everything people already love about the space.
The Stories That Brought Everyone Together
While the visual details were stunning, some of our favorite moments happened during the toasts. Because Rachel and Graeme spent so much of their relationship living internationally, many guests knew only pieces of their story. The speakers did an incredible job weaving together the full picture. They shared stories of Rachel's life before Graeme. Stories of Graeme's adventures before Rachel. Stories of the relationship that grew across oceans, time zones, and countless airport terminals.
By the end of the evening, every guest had a deeper understanding of not only how Rachel and Graeme met, but who they had been before finding each other. Those stories became one of the most meaningful design elements of the entire celebration.
A Planning Relationship Built on Trust
One of the greatest compliments we can receive from our couples is that they felt genuinely supported throughout the process.
Rachel described our role this way:
"If you are looking for someone to guard your heart and support you with not only which vendors to choose but how to navigate tough decisions, hard choices and simply stay sane during the planning process, she is your girl."
That sentiment perfectly captures what we hope to provide every couple.
Planning a wedding isn't simply about selecting vendors and managing logistics. It's about helping couples make decisions confidently, stay connected to their values, and protect their peace throughout the process. For Rachel and Graeme, that meant creating a wedding that felt joyful, creative, welcoming, and entirely true to who they are. And thanks to an incredible community of friends and family from around the world, that's exactly what they built.
Planning a Wedding at The Ruins?
If you're considering The Ruins as your Seattle wedding venue, we can't recommend it enough. Its one-of-a-kind atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for couples who value creativity, storytelling, and immersive guest experiences.
Whether you're planning from across the country, across the world, or right here in Seattle, thoughtful planning can transform an already beautiful venue into a celebration that feels deeply personal.
And if Rachel and Graeme's wedding taught us anything, it's that the most memorable weddings aren't just beautiful.
They're the ones that bring people together.
